Why Should We Be Concerned About the China-India Border Conflict Long-standing border tensions risk dangerous escalation as rivalry between these nuclear powers heats up. The conflict between Chinese and Indian troops over the two nations' 2,100-mile-long contentious border, known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC), in December 2022, demonstrates a concerning "one step forward, two steps back" tendency. This brawl was the bloodiest in the Galwan Valley since 2020, when violence killed 20 Indian and at least four Chinese soldiers. Although these skirmishes are frequently followed by talks and other measures to alleviate tensions, both parties have militarised their border policy and show no signs of relenting. And the border situation remains tight, with Beijing and New Delhi reinforcing their postures on either side of the LAC, raising the prospect of an escalation between the two nuclear-armed countries. She said shopping,
malls, cafes, restaurants, cinemas, and other public spaces, including
playgrounds and gyms, could reopen Thursday, May 14.
From Monday 18 May,
schools would return to regular classes, while bars would wait until Thursday
21 to reopen.
She warned that
groupings — including gatherings, marriages, funerals and group bookings in
restaurants or bars — would also be limited to 10 participants.
China's
Wuhan records coronavirus first since lockdown
Wuhan, the focal
point of China's novel coronavirus outbreak, declared Monday the first cluster
of infections since a month ago a quarantine on central Chinese city was
lifted, raising fears about a wider disease revival.
The latest
infections sounded a note of caution in China's attempts to relax
coronavirus-related restrictions as companies rebuild and individuals return to
work.
Wuhan recorded five
new confirmed cases, all in the same residential complex. One of them was an 89-year-old
male patient 's wife identified in the city's first confirmed case in over a
month ago.
"Currently,
the city 's mission of disease prevention and control is still very high,"
Wuhan health authority said in a statement. "We must resolutely contain
the rebound risk."
Both the new
confirmed cases were previously identified as asymptomatic, people who test
positive for the virus and can infect others but do not display clinical
symptoms like fever.
Australia's
biggest states avoid calming lockdowns
Australia's most
populous states have limited Covid-19's calming limits, including some states
permitted small gatherings and prepared to open restaurants in line with the
federal government's three-stage business reopening program.
On Friday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced plans to
lift most curbs by July in a three-step initiative to bring nearly 1 million
people back to work, as the country has reduced new Covid-19 infections to less
than 20 a day with tight lockdowns.
Australia 's cumulative Covid-19 deaths remain below 100.
Saturday's nation's capital, Canberra, and some states,
encouraged people to start visiting each other again, with up to 10 people
attending indoor and outdoor meetings, including weddings.
Throughout South Australia, restaurants and cafes will be
permitted outdoor dining from Monday for up to 10 guests, and pubs, bars and
restaurants will reopen next Friday in the Northern Territory.
Nonetheless, New South Wales and Victoria states, which make
up over half of the country's population and almost two-thirds of the country's
Covid-19 incidents, expect to announce proposals to relax business restrictions
only next week.
New South Wales Health Minister Brad Hazzard said nearly
300,000 people were screened for coronavirus in the state on Saturday, and
while 3,000 had screened positively, 82 percent were now well again.
Before Mother's Day on Sunday, Hazzard urged people not to
give up on social distancing and hand-washing while visiting their mothers.
"It's really hard not to hug your mum or kiss your mum,
but it's the wisest choice not to," said Hazzard.
Most nursing homes around the country have begun allowing
restricted visits this weekend, with some requiring temperature tests and flu
vaccine evidence before allowing visitors with a strict 1.5 meter social gap.
Although schools reopened last week in Western Australia and
South Australia, Monday's state of Queensland was ready to send back
kindergarten, year 1, 11, and 12 students.
but I have got a really excited grade 1 student who
absolutely can not wait to go to school in my home, and I'm sure there's still
plenty of kids and moms ready to go back to school, Minister Steven Miles
told reporters Saturday.
Australia and New Zealand Banking Group, Australia's fourth largest
bank, told workers that they were planning for a phased return to work, with no
more than 35% of their employees in the office at any time.
Today, New Zealand announced two new Covid-19 incidents,
bringing the country 's total to 1492. Twenty-one coronavirus-related deaths.

Iran is preparing to swiftly increase oil production if US sanctions are lifted.
Iran is planning a rapid boost in oil output, according to a senior oil ministry official, as discussions between Tehran and six major nations continue to eliminate US sanctions that have kept the country producing significantly below capacity since 2018. Iran and the six nations have been in discussions since April to resurrect a 2015 nuclear agreement that was terminated three years ago by former US President Donald Trump, reimposing sanctions. Most of the country's crude output would be restored within a month if sanctions are eased, according to Farokh Alikhani, production manager of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), who spoke to the oil ministry's SHANA website. Oil output has been restored to pre-sanctions levels at one-week, one-month, and three-month intervals, according to meticulous planning." Iraq struck with a new pandemic: domestic violence
"More morphine!" screamed Malak's mother, her 20-year-old daughter hospitalized after a marital fight, leaving her badly burned — the latest victim of domestic abuse aggravated by Iraq's isolation. Since mid-March, the nationwide lockdown is intended to keep coronavirus cases down in the country, but has led to a spike in another sad statistic: domestic violence. Iraq's community police chief, Brigadier General Ghalib Atiyah, told AFP that his domestic violence cases have risen by an average of 30% since the curfew came into effect — with some places seeing as much as a 50% spike. The United Nations in Iraq (UNAMI) announced in a single week: "A woman's rape with special needs, spousal assault, immolation and self-immolation, as well as self-inflicted injuries caused by spousal violence, sexual exploitation of children, and suicide ...
